An Idea...

An Idea.

Since it seems that doing every week assignments seems to be inconsistent, maybe we could setup long term assignments.  That way more time can be spent on a piece, and everyone won't feel rushed, unless they choose so by waiting until last minute.

For example.

  • Each person picks a story they like and storyboards it.
  • Several illustrations based around a similar idea.  Here is and example
  • Pick a similar topic of study (ex. composition, shading, anatomy, etc.) and every week show sketches or material that represents progress.

Post some comments, or we can talk about it on Thursday.

ConceptArtWorld

Found an interesting site that focuses on concept art and conceptual artists. The site also covers concept art books and companies that provide conceptual art services. Some of you might enjoy a look.

Draw Night Assignment

Hello again everyone.  I thought I would whip up a little assignment before we get back together for this weeks draw night.  This assignment is voluntarily, but strongly encouraged.

It is time to stretch our story telling skills both in word and the brush.

Come up with a 1 to 5 minute short story.  (Using basic story structure.  Beginning with a problem that builds up to a climax, and then ends with a solution).  Type it out, so others can read it.

And for the art part of it.

Create as many illustrations, of any point of your story, as you want. (You could do a storyboard or a comic if you want to spend the time :) .

Then the last part of the assignment it to show it at draw night.  And, if you want, be critiqued.

I hope that some of you will be interested in the assignment.  In my personal ventures I have found it useful to come up with a story for my art.  Not just to have it to tell other people, but as a self motivator.  It helps bring purpose to your art.

Any questions or suggestions are appreciated.

We will post this weeks draw night later on this week.
Have fun and see you on Thursday.

Digital Sketching at Draw Night

A sketch from last draw night. I will get a link up for the finished piece when it is done.

It was a little last minute at notifying everyone about where it was. I will definitely do better in the future.

Also, thanks for those who showed up last time.

Sorry This Week Is Canceled

Some things have come up and we will not be hosting draw night this Thursday. But still planning on it for next week. So see you all then!

Heres an idea.

After a little discussion at our last draw night we decided to give out an assignment.

Draw something, in the medium of your choice, about a janitor who has become friends with a bum, and they have a roadshow that involves cats and toast.

You don't have to include everything in your masterpiece, but try to include most of the idea presented.

We hope that everyone has fun with this, and can't wait to see what you come up with for next Thursday.

draw night origins

I thought I would go ahead and post the drawing I worked on during the first draw night. it's not professional grade by any means, but that's not really the point of draw night. I'm happy that I was able to sit down and draw.

Draw Night Established!

welcome to the draw night blog!

Description
we are a group of artists who meet together weekly to help and encourage each other as we develop our skills. the idea of the group is to give us a time to sit down and draw, which is often hard to come by! with a group there will be critiques available, and learning opportunities from different artists.
Meetings
meetings are held weekly, at a different location. the location can be e-mailed to you upon request, but will not be posted on the blog for security purposes. When we meet together we encourage all to participate in a critique at the beginning. this will be followed by a short presentation on new techniques or tutorials a member has found useful. afterwards the group can sit back and draw, uninterrupted. at the end members are again encouraged to critique each other, to allow for growth and improvement. before leaving an "assignment" will be given for the artists to complete throughout the week, giving us an excuse to draw, and something to bring for the critique next meeting.
participation in critiques is optional, but strongly encouraged.
both digital and traditional media are encouraged at the meetings.
